The Difference Between CBD and THC

As the legal use of hemp and other cannabis products have taken over the market, consumers are becoming more curious about their options. This includes cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the two major natural compounds found in cannabis sativa plants.

Both CBD and THC are natural compounds derived from the same plant – cannabis sativa. Both cannabis and hemp produced, CBD and THC are the most prominent cannabinoids found in a cannabis plant. So, you might be thinking, “oh so it’s just cannabis, right?” Well, not exactly.

CBD can be extracted from hemp or cannabis while THC is the main psychoactive compound found in cannabis which produces that high sensation. Cannabis has a higher concentration of THC, while Hemp has a higher concentration of CBD. They have the same chemical makeup, 21 carbon atoms, 30 hydrogen atoms, and two oxygen atoms. The difference is they do not have the same arrangement, and the body receives them as completely different compounds. These compounds bind to neurotransmitters to your brain which affects things like mood, pain, sleep and memory.

The Psychoactive Component

The main difference between CBD and THC is how they make you feel. As many may know, THC is recognized for its high sensation you get from it, a psychoactive effect. Because it is still illegal in certain states, many use CBD as a “non-psychoactive” alternative. Basically, meaning CBD will not get you high, it will just make you feel like it. It will give users that relaxing, calm feels without the extra elevated high like THC will make you feel. Some CBD will have small traces of THC in their makeup, but it is still not enough to actually get you high.

Both compounds have different effects on the body. Communicating with Endocannabinoid System (ECS), CBD and THC when used help regulate functions like sleep, mood, appetite and more. Although they both interact with the ECS system, they have separate effects with different medical benefits. CBD and THC have several of the same medical benefits. They can provide a lot of relief from several conditions, but the big main difference is CBD doesn’t cause euphoric effects that occur when using THC.

CBD Benefits

There are so many benefits associated with CBD and CBD Oils. CBD connects to your body’s cannabinoid receptors and reportedly helps with pain caused by complex problems such as Crohn’s disease, diabetes and more. CBD is also known to help reduce anxiety and depression. In one Brazilian study, 57 men received either oral CBD or a placebo 90 minutes before they underwent a simulated public speaking test. Researchers found the 300mg dose of CBD was successful, significantly reducing any anxieties during the test. The men reported feeling calmer, level headed and even if nervous they were still able to do the tasks at hand. The placebo was reported to have little to no effect on anxiety.

CBD oil has even been used and known to safely treat insomnia and anxiety in younger adults. Acting as a reliever, the CBD helps bring a calming, euphoric state without feeling elevated. This is why many people prefer CBD to traditional THC. It is also available in so many different forms now. CBD can be taken in a capsule or oil tinctures, edibles and more. It has even made it to the beauty world being added into facial creams, lotions, body wash and more.

More than half of US states have legalized marijuana using it as “medical cannabis” for those who need or feel cannabis helps them with their conditions, pains, anxieties and more. With a doctor’s note or an ID of 21-year-old or older patients can purchase cannabis at dispensaries. The effects of the THC have been known to offset many otherwise painful symptoms associated with certain pains and nausea. THC is also known to help muscle spasticity, insomnia, low appetite and more. With THC this is what is going to get you high and feeling good.

Side Effects

Even though both are great it's important to know how it will affect the body and some side effects. CBD is known to rarely exhibit any noticeable side effects, even when taking large doses. A study done by the World Health Organization (WHO) stated, “CBD was tolerated in all patients, with no signs of toxicity or serious side effects.” If any side effects were detected, it was usually a result of the CBD interacting with another drug the user took at the same time.

THC on the other hand, does have well known side effects. Some users have experienced an increased heart rate, coordination problems, dry mouth, slower reaction times and more. These side effects are associated with the compound’s psychoactive properties. THC is not for the weak!

Drug Testing

Standard drug tests typically focus or look for chemicals related to THC, so you can expect it to show up on the screen. So you might question, does CBD show up too? The short answer is maybe. Some CBD products may contain small amounts of THC, up to 0.3 percent. Although almost negligible, such a small amount would not be enough to cause any psychoactive side effects. It is still likely to show up on a drug test.

Final Word

CBD and THC are derived from the same cannabis plant. Even though they are, the two compounds are completely different and offer different properties. THC is typically known for its high feeling and psychoactive effects while CBD is more known for its health benefits. Both are great for the body depending on what you want to use it for and how you want to feel. It is important to keep in mind before using either is to be sure to check with your doctor and consider the effects with vibe with you.
